These Magazine photos and notes were just discovered in an old canister
with other WWII documents of my Father's (Fred Brinkman). Dad never mentioned these so it was a real surprise. His letter
(which can be found under the Personal Accounts Page) documents, well, his
experience on Iwo. I was never able, however, to really image the scene until
I saw this photo. Further research on the photo sets the time and date to be D-day + 1 (not D-day+3). Crisp shadows also pin the date to D-Day to D-day+1 since D-day+2 through D-day+4 had poor visibility and rain. The shadows also put the time at about 2:45 in the afternoon (Iwo Jima time). This would have been after the loss of Don Bowman and shortly before the loss of Norman Richards. I have obtained an 8X10 photograph from the original negative.
